If you’ve moved to Poland recently you’ve probably came across someone telling you to “just blik the money”. It is quite unique and very convenient mobile payment method. You can send someone money securely and instantly with just a few clicks on your smartphone.
How Blik works?
- Pay in stores with your smartphone
- Withdraw cash from ATMs
- Pay online
- Make instant payments to phone numbers
The system has been adopted by most of the major Polish banks. It is built within their mobile banking apps and doesn’t require any special registration. All you need is a regular bank account and a smartphone, of course.
The app generates a unique code, which is active only for two minutes. You can type it in store, at the ATM or on ecommerce website to finalize the deal. To increase the security of the transaction, you will need to confirm it within the app with a special PIN. Then, the bank authorizes the transactions and the whole process takes less than a few seconds.
Why is it convenient?
First of all, you don’t need to carry your wallet with you, as you can pay at most of the stores with your smartphone. Nowadays, we tend to carry our smartphones everywhere we go, therefore you won’t have an awkward situation when you realize you’d forgotten your wallet, while the cashier asks you to pay for your groceries. You also don’t need to worry about losing your credit card while traveling around the city. Secondly, when sending money to your friends, whether it’s splitting a bill at a restaurant or lending someone a few bucks, you don’t need to remember their long bank account numbers. All you need is their phone number, which is probably already in your contact list. The transaction is virtually instant. The main aim was to make the payments as easy as sending an SMS.
How to use Blik?
If you have a bank account with chosen Polish banks, you should be able to access blik through their mobile apps. You don’t need to register specifically at Blik to start using it. Download the dedicated online banking app to your smartphone and navigate to mobile payments section. There you should find a tab for Blik payments. First thing you see there is a special 6 number code, which automatically changes every 2 minutes. It’s all you need to make any purchase whether it’s online or in stores. For example, if you want to buy something online, you don’t need to fill in your credit card’s information or log into PayPal account. Simply choose “Blik Payment” option and type in these 6 numbers from you app. Then, validate the transaction within the app and you are done.
Some online stores don’t support Blik payments directly yet. However, at the checkout you can choose services like DotPay, Przelewy24, Blue Media, eCard, PayU or CashBill. Then, instead of logging into your bank account through them, choose Blik payment there.
When in store you will need to type the code to the terminal, like you would do with a PIN of your debit card. Again, accept the payment in the app and it’s done.
You can also make a direct transaction to anyone’s phone number. It’s as straight-forward as sending an SMS. Type in the number and the amount and click “send”.
Keep in mind that this system is designed for smaller transactions, therefore you may not be able to send a couple of thousands of dollars… The limits are adjustable and depend on your bank.
